Abstract
Design Thinking is a design methodology that provides a solution-based approach to
solving problems and is viewed as both an ideology and a process, concerned with solving
complex wicked problems in a highly user-centric way. Wicked problems are social or cultural
problems with many interdependent factors making them seem impossible to solve. Because
the factors are often incomplete, in flux, and difficult to define, solving wicked problems
requires a deep understanding of the users involved, and an innovative approach provided
by methods such as Design Thinking. Design Thinking focuses on humans first and foremost,
seeking to understand people’s needs and come up with effective solutions to meet those
needs. It is based heavily on the methods and processes that designers use (hence the
name), but it has actually evolved from a range of different fields—including architecture,
engineering and business.

The Assignment Task
You are required to write an essay. This must demonstrate your understanding of the Design
Thinking methodology and make reference to the principles of Human-centred Design. In
addition, you need to recognise that a variety of problem-solving processes exist, identify
these making reference to the number of steps/stages, present the value of the individual
steps and how these might differ from other models.
Furthermore, globally many companies are embracing Design Thinking as a part of their
innovation strategy. You are required to identify three (3) of these companies and highlight
how, why and where they implemented Design Thinking. What challenge(s) they needed to
solve. For example, was it related to products, services, communications or social impact?
You need to bring attention to the resulting innovation that occurred by undertaking in depth
academic research providing details on the features, advantages and benefits derived from
the innovation leading to the particular company gaining a competitive advantage.
1. This requires writing an essay (see Deakin University’s guide to essay writing).
2. Demonstrate your understanding of the Design Thinking methodology.
3. Human-centred Design: Make reference to the principles of Human-centred Design.
4. Models: You must document and describe the three (3) established (most popular)
Design Thinking models discussed in class. To confirm, these are:
• The IDEO 5-step Design Thinking Model;
• The Stanford University d.school Model; and
• The model proposed by Prof. Jeanne Liedtka from Darden Business School, namely
the 4 W’s and Ten Tools approach.
• For each of the above models, you are to provide the following:
a. A brief summary of the Model.
b. When was it first introduced?
c. Who developed or introduced it?
d. The number of steps and names of each.
e. How this Model may be different or better than others? Your opinion.
f. Is this Model aimed at a specific industry or audience?
g. Include a single quality/high resolution image with appropriate title and
referencing. The image must represent the structure/steps.
5. Alternatives: You must also include three (3) other models (not covered in class) that
you have researched. For example, IBM Loop, Nueva School, British Design Council
Double Diamond, Model Edward de Bono Six Thinking Hats, Frog and Google Sprints.
There are many more.
• For each of these alternative models you are to provide the following:
a. A brief summary of the Model
b. When was it first introduced?
c. Who developed or introduced it?
d. The number of steps and names of each.
e. How this particular Model may be different or better than others? Your opinion.
f. Is this Model aimed at a specific industry or audience?
g. Include a single quality/high resolution image with appropriate title and
referencing. The image must represent the structure/steps.
6. Companies/industry: Globally many companies are embracing Design Thinking as a

part of their innovation strategy with some having developed their own frameworks for
implementing an innovation process or methodology.
• You are required to:
a. Identify a three (3) companies and highlight how, why, when and where they
implemented Design Thinking or a similar problem-solving innovation process.
b. What identified challenge(s) need to be solved? For example, was it related to a
specific product, service, communication challenge or social impact need?
c. You should include an image that provides a visual reference for the company and/
or design challenge, plus a company logo.
d. You need to bring attention to the resulting innovation that occurred by
undertaking in depth academic research providing details on the features,
advantages and benefits derived from the innovation leading to the company
gaining a competitive advantage.
This task assesses achievement in these Unit & Graduate Learning Outcomes
ULO1 Display an understanding of the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for visual
communication design practice.
ULO2 Demonstrate an ability to effectively communicate ideas using specific language, concepts and
media to transmit ideas in response to design briefs.
GLO1 Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities.
GLO2 Communication.
